Artist’s Statement:

I am interested in the suburban landscape and the twinned idea of familiarity and strangeness, using paint to dissolve the contours of things. These roses were planted and cared for by the previous owner of my home. They persist despite my negligence as I attempt to balance work, an art practice and a new baby. Experimenting with the malleability and translucency of watercolour, I explore the way drawing can extend time by being layered and reworked. Jean?s now gone, but the garden she left is similarly being layered and reworked. Her haunting compels me to keep the plants she cared for alive.
