Artists’ Statement
The painting Deforestation represents the colonisation of landscape and the changing landscape of colonisation. This artwork responds to the increasing awareness of white colonial monuments that only represent Australian history from the point of view of settlers. In Deforestation the central motif of an empty plinth in a manicured clearing juxtaposed against the remnant indigenous bush, suggests a reconsideration of Western Australian landmarks and their celebrated histories.
