MEDIA RELEASE | 27 September 2024
Four Kelpie puppies will be auctioned on Friday 27 September at the Perth Royal Show to raise funds for Telethon.
Members of the public can watch the event, and even bid on a dog, at 2:00pm in the Sheep Pavilion (Horwood Pavilion), when four professionally trained young Kelpies will find new homes.
The muster dogs – named Pilbara Ruby, Pilbara Bob, Pilbara Brutus and Beraking Gabby – were bred by Aticia Grey of Pilbara Working Dogs, and generously donated by regional families and businesses. Aticia, along with her dog Gossip, appeared on the first series of Muster Dogs, which aired on ABC and Netflix.
The auction is part of the ‘Kelpies for Kids’ initiative, founded by Kate Willcocks, which supports Telethon’s critical work to support medical research, life-saving equipment, and essential services for children facing adversity across WA.
“When Rohan and I started Kelpies for Kids, our goal was to raise awareness for children in hospitals and remind families – especially those in rural areas – that we are thinking of them and the challenges they face,” says Kate Willcocks.
The pups were named after children involved with 2023 Telethon, symbolising the hope and support that Telethon provides to families in need.
This event is set to be a highlight of the Perth Royal Show, showcasing the generosity and community spirit of Western Australians.
Pre-bidding is available through Auction Plus.
One of the original puppies, Fred, sustained an injury ten days ago, which led to the unfortunate amputation of his back leg. In light of this, Fred will no longer be part of the auction. However, Tim and Kirsten Bending, who have been training another puppy, have kindly stepped in to donate Gabby in Fred’s place.
Fred is recovering well and will be placed in a loving home when he’s fully healed. He is set to embark on a meaningful partnership with sale auctioneer and fellow amputee, Tiny Holly, to inspire and support children and adults alike. More details on this partnership will be shared in the future.
