Axes Ready: Epic Woodchop Showdown at the Perth Royal Show

The 2024 World Woodchop Championship kicks off at 5pm this afternoon at Claremont Showgrounds Main Arena, showcasing endurance and precision to compete for the title and a $4,000 cash prize.

The finalists are:

  • Jake Dingle (reigning champion from QLD)
  • Gerald Youles (QLD)
  • Laurence O’Toole (VIC)
  • Alek Ashcroft (WA)
  • Ethan Reynolds (WA)
  • Joe Thomas (WA)
  • Matt Coffey (VIC)
  • James Geiger (QLD)


This year’s Perth Royal Show has delivered a thrilling woodchopping spectacle, with a diverse array of events in the Woodchop Arena including woodchopping, tree pegging, and sawing.

Competitors from across Australia and New Zealand have battled it out through multiple heats for a share in the $12,000 prize pool. Handicapping adds an extra challenge for the top contenders as they strive for the championship title.

Standout competitors include Jake Dingle, reigning World 325mm Underhand Champion, and Mitchell Hewitt, a veteran from Queensland known for his tree pegging skills.

Athletes range from 14 to 84 years old, with generations of axemen such as the legendary Reynolds and Rees families. Steve Rees Jr. is attending Show alongside his father, showcasing the deep-rooted family tradition in the sport.
