Pigs In Schools
The inaugural Pigs in Schools competition brings together students from Agricultural Colleges across Western Australia to take on the rewarding challenge of raising pigs for a school term. In WA, where working with pigs is a rare opportunity, this hands-on experience is especially valuable.
These Year 10-12 students are managing a mix of Large White, Landrace, Berkshire and Duroc pigs, mastering the intricacies of pig husbandry, and navigating the unique biosecurity challenges that pigs present. This experience equips them with agricultural skills that go beyond the more common sheep and cattle.
At the Perth Royal Show, their pigs will be judged “on hoof” and “on hook,” highlighting the students’ hard work and dedication. But this event is more than just a competition—it’s a valuable opportunity for these future farmers to connect with industry professionals, gain insights, and build networks that will support their agricultural careers. This program is an important step in attracting and retaining talent in WA’s agricultural sector.
